Review: Sure Shot

Sure Shot Sure Shot by Sarina Bowen
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a second chance romance that hits the ground running and instantly stole my heart.

I knew I loved Bess before reading Sure Shot but I don't think I was prepared for how much I would relate to her.  She was such a balanced heroine  fiercely independent, owns her own business, confident, handles professional athletes better than any man.  She is also honest with herself about her personal goals and making space for them in her professional life and is vulnerable with her friends and Tank.

What can I say about Tank? I love a hero who is a little damaged and has lived and learned from his mistakes.  There is something so desirable about the way Tank is healing or maybe running from his divorce and trade and the reasons behind both.  He's just so  dreamy and masculine and hurting and healing and it is everything.

I think it is actually the 10th Brooklyn Bruisers book if you add in Bountiful and Moonlighter and I feel like Sarina Bowen really had fun with this one  There were references to many of the previous characters and even a cross series reference that was a super fun Easter egg!

This book hit me right in the feels. I found a deeply personal connection to Tank and Bess' story and their experiences.  Sarina Bowen addressed what can be a sensitive topic with compassion and kindness.   Like all of Sarina Bowen's books I could not put it down, I completed the whole book in less than 24 hours, reading between my other adult responsibilities.  I tried to read slow, I really did, but Sarina Bowen writes stories that I have to keep reading and worlds I never want to leave.

I received an ARC of this book and voluntarily give my review

Excerpt:

“I don’t like this.” A hand went to the back of my chair, a head popped up between our two front seats, and that was announced. Mason was in the driver’s seat and I was in the passenger seat. Logan looked at each of us. He was wearing a distinct frown-smirk combo on his face as he said his piece. Problem was, he’d been saying it since we left Boston, since we landed in California, and since we’d been in the rental and driving three hours past Fallen Crest. It’d been said. It’d been heard. We were now at the part where we wanted to murder my brother-in-law. Or, correction, where I wanted to murder my brother-in-law. Mason was stoic and driving. He was able to get in the zone and tune Logan out. Taylor was sitting in her chair, reading on her phone. She had the whole tuning-out thing too. Not me. I was a mom, so somehow that meant I always had to be aware and alert, and now I was close to grinding my teeth and yelling for a Logan time-out. Five minutes in the back, please. Mason grunted. “Tough shit.” Nice. Maybe he wasn’t so ‘tuned out.’ I looked at Taylor. “Can you keep him under control?” She glanced up from her phone. “You know the answer to that question. You’ve known him longer.” Touché. I’m not sleeping with him.” Taylor just laughed. “Shouldn’t have said that. He’s probably refraining from twenty different inappropriate jokes as I’m talking.” Ahem.” Logan gave us both a look. “It’s because I love both of you—in different ways—and respect both of you that I’m not touching that. But Sam…” Logan leveled me with an aggrieved look, his eyebrows raised. “Can you watch what you say? Old Logan would’ve been all over that one, and can you imagine the innuendos?” He gestured to himself, his face tight. “But I’m here. Being polite—” “Sorry. I thought since you’re older and in law school, you’d be more mature.” “It’s like you don’t know me at all.” But he was grinning. “Logan.” Insert some assertive tone here. I had to make my point. “We got a babysitter for the weekend. I got permission for a full weekend off from my training. Your brother is on a much-needed vacation before football training starts, and I have been needing Heather time even though I saw her a few weeks ago.” I had a point. What was it? “So shut it, okay?” That was my point. “All I’m saying is that we were supposed to do the yacht. Nate and Matteo were up for it. Now suddenly we’re doing a camping thing. I’m not clear on the why?” Mason glanced into the rearview mirror. “It was Nate’s idea. He said something about family research. What’s your issue? You like camping.” “That’s when we were young. We did stupid shit back then like. We’re old now. If we go camping, I prefer it to be on things like yachts. Or we stay in a mega-mansion and our camping is napping by the pool. I like that type of camping.” Taylor frowned at him. “Babe.” He shot her a look, frowning slightly, but his face softened. He reached out, touching her leg. “It’s nothing. I’ll get over it.” Good. That was settled. Two minutes later, it wasn’t.

Review: Blowback

Blowback Blowback by Monica James
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

WOW....just WOW! This book left me excited, invigorated, fulfilled and a little shook up. Monica James did something amazing with this duet and I am finding the more I read by her the more I love her books.

Sometimes, after reading a book I need a bit of time, to compose my thoughts, wrap my head around how I am feeling, maybe even debate the rating I want to give. I am here to tell you I finished this book 10 seconds ago and I could not wait share how much I loved this five star read. A beyond perfect conclusion to this duet! This book played like a movie in my mind, a Tarantino film actually. I was getting major True Romance vibes (that is one of my favorite movies- if you haven't seen it please go now).

What struck me about this story is the character development. I feel like I really got to see Bull and Tiger grow as individuals but also together. Monica James wrote their growth in a way that felt authentic and gritty and sometimes ugly but also beautiful. Neither is a perfect person, but watching them not only accept the flaws in each other but the flaws in themselves was beautiful.

Bull is an antihero to be admired, and in the end I think this story played out the only way it could, utter freaking perfection.

Review: Wildfire

Wildfire Wildfire by Chelle Bliss
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was my first Chelle Bliss book but definitely not my last. I am going to go back and read all the men of inked books because there are so many characters I need more of. Callie Dalton and Jacob Morgan narrated this book perfectly. Tamara's insecurities bothered me during certain points because she was lacking confidence, but there was not reason for her to be that way, at least none that was described in the book. I feel like there is still more to learn about Mammoth and Tam's relationship behind closed doors and i would love a follow up novel or novella because this story ended way too soon. I highly recommend!

Review: One to Watch

One to Watch One to Watch by Kate Stayman-London
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

One to Watch is unlike anything I have read before. Bea is a plus size fashion blogger who becomes the lead on a reality TV dating show. Her goal is to break down the expectation that all women are size 0, but her vision and the producers vision creates a very different product. This story deals with societal ideals of beauty, coming to terms with ones own identity and the way traumas from our past can inform our opinions of our future. Bea was beautifully flawed and relatable and I adored her as a female lead. The really unique thing about this book is that I had no idea who the hero was supposed to be, right up until the end. With 25 men competing for Bea's affection, it is difficult to know who to trust. My biggest complaint about the book is the mixed modalities in which the story is told, a combination of text, blogs, articles, interviews and narrative. While the information was ultimately supporting the narrative of the story, the differing formats interrupted my reading flow. This story was a solid 3.5 star review, but I rounded up for creativity and a strong heroine.

Review: The Happy Ever After Playlist

The Happy Ever After Playlist The Happy Ever After Playlist by Abby Jimenez
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have been excited about this book since i finished The Friend Zone in 2019. When I learned that Erin Mallon and Zachary Webber were narrating I knew that I would have to consume this book via audio. I was thrilled when Libro.fm had The Happy Ever After Playlist (THEAP) available as one of it's April ALCs I squealed with glee (literally). This book was everything I hoped for and more. I was thrilled to find out that there was an underlying rockstar romance trope (my catnip). Sloan was such an interesting character at the end of The Friend Zone when she loses her fiancé and I was glad that THEAP starts a couple years later. Sloan is still grieving but her journey to find love is more realistic. Tucker is an up and coming musician, and when Sloan finds his dog, they begin a special kind of friendship. Tucker is such a unique rock star hero that you can't help but fall instantly in love with him, his family and of course, his dog. Sloan's journey to healing is natural and pays homage to her love of her previous fiancé without damaging his memory. I could not stop listening to this book, and I lost many hours of sleep because of it. Abby Jimenez has written another amazing book and I know that she will continue to be a one click author for me.

Review: Blue Umbrella Sky

Blue Umbrella Sky Blue Umbrella Sky by Rick R. Reed
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

This was a beautiful story about healing and learning to give and accept love again following loss.  Both Milt and Billy were flawed characters who are actively working on healing themselves and maintaining their balance.

This was a solid 3.5 star book for me.  I loved both of the characters and felt that their journeys were natural and true to the way that Rick Reed developed them.  The steaminess factor was low, with minimal descriptions of physical interactions focusing instead on the relationships and emotional connections between characters.  The backdrop of Palm Springs was perfect for this story, and as a SoCal native who has frequently visited the area it was easy to picture the mobile home park, hiking trails and even the strip malls.

This was a beautiful story and I recommend to someone looking for a book that really focuses on emotional connections.

Review: Down and Dirty

Down and Dirty Down and Dirty by Kendall Ryan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I read and reviewed this book as an ebook ARC, but was lucky enough to also win an audible code. Jacob Morgan and Emma Wilder gave a perfect performance of Aubree and Landon. And this story was even sweeter the second time around! Below is my original review.

This series keeps getting better and better! Landon is not only a hockey hottie, but also has been saving himself for the right girl. Avoiding the puck bunnies and committed to his sport, you know he has it bad for a Aubree, when they end up married in Vegas after a joint bachelor bachelorette party. Landon is wholesome, sweet, kind, caring but still with a bit of Alpha in him. He never pressures Aubree to do anything and constantly checks for consent, which is an extremely attractive quality in any person. Aubree, is not as sure about Landon as he is about her. She is 7 years older than him, is afraid of losing her independence by committing to a man, and has some big changes happening at work. There were times in this book where Aubrey was frustrating to me, withholding information and making decisions on her own. Overall though, this book was fantastic, I was instantly invested in these characters and couldn't put the book down

Review: A Secret for a Secret

A Secret for a Secret A Secret for a Secret by Helena Hunting
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book got me out of my COVID-19 slump, probably not the best thing to lead with but 100% truth. Helena Hunting has a way with words and characters that instantly brightens my life. King and Queenie are nothing like I expected and everything I needed. Ryan Kingston is definitely the wholesome milk drinking "boy scout" that we expect from meeting him in previous books. His goodness (for lack of a better term) is reminiscent of Alex Waters in Pucked, asking for consent and being overly considerate of others. Where Alex was wholesome and Canadian and raised to be that way, King is just good, good down to his bones, and his background is colorful and really fun to read about (Don't worry I won't give any spoilers). Queenie as described in the book is a storm. She is a whirlwind and while we know from the blurb that she is the General Manager's daughter, she is so much more. She is a level of controlled chaos that King welcomes into his life and it is everything!

I loved this book so much and I tried to read slowly, take my time but like all of Helena Hunting's books I devoured it in less than 24 hours (would have been one sitting but sleep and work interfered- damn them). The peeks into Alex and Violet's life were present in this book, as they were in other books in the All In series, and I think there were some teasers to future books and future characters embedded into this story, I am crossing my fingers that I am right.

I received an ARC of this book through NetGalley and voluntarily give my review.

The Dirty Series, Book 2

Genre:
Erotica/Romance
Tropes:
Friends-to-lovers, Close Proximity, Cooking, Humor

Available on Amazon:
http://mybook.to/dirtychef-blog

Synopsis:

Alessia on Adam:
He’s a feeling. His energy is a force that makes an impact whether you want it to or not. He’s charming, easygoing, and loved by everyone. Especially me. He’s been the love of my life since I was a fifteen-year-old summer camper and he was a burned-out chef volunteering to make sloppy joes in the dining hall.
Unfortunately, he has a type. Tall, thin, and gorgeous. And I’m...none of those things.
I’m the friend. The roommate. The one he runs a restaurant with.
Adam on Alessia:
She’s my past, my present, and my future. She’s my muse. I cook with her tastes in mind. I cook for her. But, as my brother points out, she won’t be my future if I don’t come clean about the fact that I’ve been hung up on her for years.
Coming clean might not be a choice at this rate, though. If I see Alessia on another goddamn dating app, I’m gonna lose my shit. I physically can’t stay away from her any longer, even if I risk losing everything we’ve built together.
The Objective:
The sexiest Valentine’s Day menu ever created. And maybe, just maybe, fingers aren’t the only thing getting licked after this meal.
Buon Appetito!

Excerpt:

She’d meet someone soon. They’d get married and she would squeeze out a few runts, and I would never see her again. It would start out slow, of course. First, we’d stop living together because her new man would find that weird. Then, she’d miss a few shifts at work. Dates and whatnot. Eventually, she’d hire someone—maybe a hostess or bartender. She’d come to work one day with a rock on her finger, and she would burst with excitement as she announced she was pregnant.
I wanted to fucking hurl.
“Oh, look,” she gasped softly.
I raised a brow at the babies. The boy yawned.
“So cute,” Alessia whispered. “I know I’m being silly, but I’m just so happy for Isla and Jack.”
Yeah, everyone was pleased as punch, from grandparents and siblings to friends and even the freaking nurses.
Aforementioned family members also knew how to go home and catch some rest.
“I’m gonna check in with the new parents,” I said. “Then we’re outta here, all right?”
Alessia nodded, probably thrilled to get another few minutes of staring at the babies.
Yup, I was definitely losing her.
Fuck.
I found my brother in the next hall. Isla was asleep in the hospital bed, and Jack was in the uncomfortable chair next to her, checking his phone.
I knocked lightly on the doorframe, and he glanced up and smiled sleepily.
“Mom just texted and asked if you’d managed to drag Alessia out of here yet.” He kept his voice down and stood up, walking over so we could let Isla sleep. I stepped out into the hall and removed my ball cap. “You okay?”
“Sure.” I nodded with a dip of my chin. “I talked to Alex and Jamie. We’re doing a Grady Night this weekend at Mom and Dad’s. You know that means free babysitting.”
Jack chuckled quietly and scrubbed a hand over his face. Then he flicked a glance through the window to Isla’s room. “I’ll talk to Isla,” he murmured. “I’m not so naïve that I don’t believe we’ll be tired.”
“Fucking exhausted,” I agreed.
He slid his gaze back to me. “Why the rush, though?”
I shrugged and scratched my bicep. “We gotta celebrate, don’t we?”
He drew a deep breath and saw straight through me. He didn’t even bother narrowing his eyes, something he was great at when he sniffed out bullshit. Maybe he was too tired. Or maybe I was so goddamn pathetic in my quest to fill Alessia’s calendar with family shit that it was too easy, too obvious.
“Are you never going to talk to her?” Jack asked curiously, and I tensed up. “Be honest with me, Adam. You’re seriously just going to let her run off with someone she’ll be content with at best.”
“Don’t.” I clenched my jaw. I’d hidden my feelings for Alessia for longer than I cared to admit, and no one had so much as suspected anything until Isla barged into Jack’s life and assumed Alessia and I were together the very first time she met us. “You don’t know what it’s like,” I told him.
He hiked his brows. “Oh, I don’t?”
I shook my head. “No, you don’t, and I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking about her—” I gestured to the room where Isla slept “—and the babies, but it ain’t the same. Alessia is in every part of my life. We live together, we run Coho together—she’s my best friend. She’s my past, my present, and my future. If I lose her, I have nothing.” An invisible noose tightened around my neck, and I hauled in a breath. The mere idea of not having Alessia in my life was fucking crippling. “I won’t risk it,” I stated. “I live and breathe that girl.”
Something softened in my brother’s gaze. “She might not be your future, though.”
I didn’t need a reminder.

About Cara:
I'm often awkwardly silent or, if the topic interests me, a chronic rambler. In other words, I can discuss writing forever and ever. Fiction, in particular. The love story—while a huge draw and constantly present—is secondary for me, because there's so much more to writing romance fiction than just making two (or more) people fall in love and have hot sex. There's a world to build, characters to develop, interests to create, and a topic or two to research thoroughly. Every book is a challenge for me, an opportunity to learn something new, and a puzzle to piece together. I want my characters to come to life, and the only way I know to do that is to give them substance—passions, history, goals, quirks, and strong opinions—and to let them evolve. Additionally, I want my men and women to be relatable. That means allowing room for everyday problems and, for lack of a better word, flaws. My characters will never be perfect.
Wait…this was supposed to be about me, not my writing.
I'm a writey person who loves to write. Always wanderlusting, twitterpating, kinking, and geeking. There's time for hockey and cupcakes, too. But mostly, I just love to write.
