Roommate by Sarina Bowen
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Ahhmazing!! Sarina Bowen may be the queen of M/M romance. Everything about this book was absolute perfection. Kieran Shipley is a quiet and self contained man. He has learned to hide all his truths and is more of an observer than active participant in his life. But that is about to change. He wants to explore what makes him happy and that starts with moving out of his parents house. He is the quintessential grumpy stoic farmer. He is only starting to admit to himself that he might be attracted to men, when a familiar face from his past returns to Coalbery.
Roderick is on the run from a failed relationship and looking to start over. He returns to his hometown, because it is as good a place as any. He is out and proud and after spending 3 years in a relationship where he had to hide because his partner was still in the closet he is tired of secrets.
Roderick and Kieran are unlikely friends, but it is clear from the start that they are both aware of the other. As their friendship develops, their natural banter and attraction shines through. Interestingly I was surprised that when drama or too much emotion was felt the person who would panic and shut down was never who I would expect.
Narrated by Stephen Dexter and Teddy Hamilton, the performances by these two were nothing short of perfection. Stephen Dexter's broody Vermont cowboy could growl in my ear all day. Teddy Hamilton, the more experienced M/M narrator playing a character who has been out of the closet for a while felt natural and there was a confidence in his voice that played well to the character.
Roomate is a complete stand alone. If you have read other True North books you will see some familiar characters, but you don't need to have read the rest to enjoy this story. This book also seems to set up some of the new World of True North books, Moo U, The Busy Bee and Vino and Veritas were all mentioned in the story.
I wish I had more stars to give this book. It was such an amazing listen and all fans of Sarina Bowen will love it, M/M fans will love it, I just can't say enough good things.
I received an ARC of this book and voluntarily give my review.
